Lily Praises Po-po, Eviscerates Elton

She may have had nothing but vitriol for cohost Elton John, but at Tuesday night's London-set GQ Men of the Year Awards, Lily Allen did have some kind words reserved for one British icon: the bobbies.

Before berating the Rocket Man onstage—and, as it were, before dispatching plenty of complimentary tipple—the 23-year-old "Smile" singer had nothing but praise for the London Metropolitan Police, thanking them publicly for rescuing a friend who had recently been abducted at gunpoint.

"My friend Charlie was kidnapped a few weeks ago and was kept in a car boot for six days without food or anything," she told reporters on her way into the show. "It was really scary."

Scarier even than going head-to-head with a cantankerous knighted pop star, if you can believe it.

It's the second such time Allen has given public props to London's boys in blue, having appended a thank-you to her most recent blog (the postscript has since been removed from the entry).

"Thank you to the Met for getting my friend Charlie back, we were all terrified and from what I hear you guys did an amazing job," she originally wrote.

But while Charlie was found unhurt after being held for a $130,000-plus ransom last month, Allen didn't quite manage to escape as unscathed from her Men of the Year hosting gig last night.

After partaking in complimentary champagne while onstage, Allen's behavior went downhill. She slurred her words onstage, let slip the formerly secret engagement of her brother Alfie and told 82-year-old award recipient Tony Bennett that she'd "still f--k him" despite his advanced age.

Which drew the ire of John, the evening's cohost.

After Allen teased the assembled crowd of showbiz bigwigs that they had reached "a very special point in the evening," the 61-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer quipped, "What, are you going to have another drink?"

To which Allen retorted, "F--k off, Elton. I'm 40 years younger than you. I have my whole life ahead of me."

Her fellow master of ceremonies—and, as it turns out, comebacks—fired back, "I could still snort you under the table."

On hand for the spectacle was celeb chef Gordon Ramsay, Elle Macpherson, Thandie Newton, Steve Coogan, Mark Ronson, Orlando Bloom and Josh Brolin, among others.
