The Most Totally American Movies Ever: Our Top 9
Happy 232nd birthday, America! Along with baseball, Britney and oh so many flavors of Doritos, you've given the world an uncountable wealth of movies to enjoy. On this momentous holiday weekend, let's focus on nine films that most fully embody the American spirit, plus a 10th to be determined by E! Online readers. (See, that's some freedom of choice right there!)
O say can you see...our list:
Harry Potter Wiz: Two-Part Finale a Cash Grab!
Sirius Black crushes young Harry Potter's innocence forever!
See, Gary Oldman played sketchy wizard Black in several Potter flicks, and he still keeps in touch with series star Daniel Radcliffe. During this week's press junket for The Dark Knight, Oldman dished on a recent chat with Radcliffe that, like, totally destroyed the young actor's childlike naïveté.
The Bourne Obesity, or How Matt Got Fat
We've been keeping our eye on Matt Damon, and not just because he's the Sexiest Man Alive. For quite some time, Damon had seemed to be plumping up like Ball Park Frank.
While some had speculated he was wearing a fat suit, Damon now admits to People his flab is 100 percent all-natural man meat.
Yep, there's now more Matt Damon to f--k love. The one-time action hero packed on between 20 and 30 pounds for his role in the upcoming thriller The Informant, which we’re guessing is about a whistler blower at a pretzel, beer and doughnut factory.
Breaking: James Bond a Superbig Video Game Nerd!
Daniel Craig's cover is about to be blown. He's the cool and suave new James Bond, but the dudes working on the Quantum of Solace video game revealed his true identity: game geek. And one who's not quite the killing machine he is onscreen. (If you haven't seen the movie's new trailer, by the way, do so now.)
Garrett Young, executive producer of the Solace tie-in game, shared the scoop with us: He went to Pinewood Studios outside of London to show the star his electronic alter ego and found Craig in his trailer, strumming a fake guitar.
"Yeah, Guitar Hero, that's our game," said Young. "Right on, that's our company, too!"
But would you want this guy in your Halo clan? Well...
Wesley Snipes Gets a Ticket to Fly
Wesley Snipes is free to go...overseas to work on some films, that is.
A federal judge signed off Wednesday on the actor's request to be able to travel for work while he waits out the appeals process pertaining to his conviction on tax-evasion charges.
According to Senior U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges' ruling, Snipes is allowed to go to London this month to complete postproduction on the horror film Gallowwalker and then to Bangkok in September to film the action flick Chasing the Dragon.
Beat Ben @ the Box Office: Big Willie Weekend
It's that time of year: Will Smith season. And the the King of July 4th has another smash hit on his hands with Hancock, costarring Oscar winner Charlize Theron and funnyman Jason Bateman. This is the only major release at the box office over the holiday weekend, and every studio clears a path because, no doubt about it, he's the No. 1 movie star in the world.
In a summer of superheroes, you also have to admire actor-turned-director Peter Berg for bringing us an entirely new character, who doesn't have to cater to both fanboys and mass audiences, or worry about staying true to the source material.
So look for Hancock to bank $127 million over the five-day weekend. Smith goes all-out, and the guy even performed a 45-minute set at his own premiere. (I got a little emotional when he introduced DJ Jazzy Jeff and did "Summertime.")
Don't think Hancock can save the day at the box office this weekend? Then drop your numbers in the comments!
Casting Couch: A Tale of Two Joshes
In this edition of Casting Couch, Lost's Josh Holloway is hoping to find some big-screen success and Josh Hartnett is heading to the stage to channel his inner Tom Cruise.
The 37-year-old Holloway, who plays badass con man Sawyer on ABC's hit series, is climbing aboard the Polish brothers' Stay Cool, touted as a "knowing-your-age comedy."
Cohen, Ferrell Feel Right at Holmes With Apatow
Here's an elementary bit of casting.
Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are set to star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the latest addition to the Judd Apatow canon, a comedy inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tales of the brilliant pipe-smoking sleuth and his reliable partner in crime solving.
Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen is penning the script for Columbia Pictures. Apatow and manager Jimmy Miller will produce.
Rate-a-Trailer: Paris Slices 'n' Sings in Repo!
Let's be clear: This way grisly, futuristic rock opera from the director of three Saw flicks is not about Paris Hilton. She just has a small part in it—as the slutty heiress of a company that sells you much-needed internal organs—and then totally repossesses them when you default on payment!
Let's also be clear: We wouldn't be writing about this movie if Paris Hilton wasn't in it.
So what do you think? Is it stylish or ghoulish—or both? Is Repo! destined to be the next Rocky Horror—or the new Glitter? Sound off in the comments.
Will Smith Save The Last Action Hancock?
The reviews aren't great. The genre's iffy. Will Smith's the star.
As far as box-office business goes, everything should be fine.
Big things were expected, per usual, of Smith, and his less-than-usual latest, Hancock, opening Wednesday.
"I think it's going to be another Will Smith gigantic opening weekend," says box-office expert Paul Dergarabedian of Media by Numbers.
Dergarabedian predicted Hancock could make $75-$80 million from Friday-Sunday, and expected the film to clear $100 million, easy, over its first five days, from Wednesday-Sunday. An opening of that size would lift Hancock, the tale of an unconventional superhero, right into the airpspace of Iron Man.
Hobbit Director del Toro Talks Cast, Creatures
The two movies based on the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, may be a long ways off—hang on until 2011 and 2012, nerds!—but they're pretty much all Mexican director Guillermo del Toro gets to talk about these days. Sure, he's out promoting this summer's comic book flick Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but, like, what's up with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf and that dragon?
We got the big scoop from del Toro himself at the Saturn Awards, where he received a lifetime achievement award. Here's what he told us about The Hobbit's casting, creatures and story:
Casting Couch: Special Guest for Stiller, Roth Hits Small Screen, Gillian Anderson Has Write Stuff
As if Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams and Ricky Gervais didn't provide enough kid-friendly comic power the first time around, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is turning the funny all the way up to 11.
The thinking man's funnyman, Christopher Guest, is bringing his comedy chops to the blockbuster sequel, signing on to star as Ivan the Terrible.
The original's stars are all back, as is new addition Bill Hader, who will play Gen. George Custer.
